Shadow enhancement provides 2-D maps with 3-D imagery
To overcome the drawbacks of conventional contour mapping, engineers use a software method of "shaded relief'- or "shadow" mapping, as it is also called, that enables them to turn a 2-D contour map into a 3-D detailed map resembling a satellite image- but that contains information not normally obtainable by satellite sensors.
